Lovely Laces Saturday 9-11am (2hrs)

Instructor: Annie Modesitt

Learn the basic theory behind knitting lace, and perfect your lace chart reading skills. Written instructions can have typos, but with a chart what you see is what you get, which is why it’s the best option for knitters who want to “see” what their lace will look like before they take up their needles. In this class we will knit a few simple lace panels, and move onto a more challenging lace pattern for those who feel ready for a challenge. This class could change your entire knitting outlook!

Participants should bring with them:

Size 5, 6, & 7 knitting needles

light colored worsted weight yarn stitch markers reading glasses (if you need them) post-it notes (to mark your chart, just one or two!)

Kumihimo - Card Method Saturday 10-12 (2 hrs) &

Saturday 3-5 (2 hrs)

Instructor: Kathleen Craig

The word Kumihimo means “the gathering of threads” and is a general term applied to the ancient art of Japanese braiding. The craft covers several techniques using various types of equipment. The most popular and versatile in use today is the maru dai (round stand). The maru dai is a wooden stool with a hole in the center atop 4 legs on a square base, traditionally 18 inches high with a 10-inch diameter top. This stool is suitable for making braids using up to 36 strands. Easy-to-make alternative equipment makes the craft more accessible to everyone. The braids can be decorative and have many uses, from curtain tiebacks to lovely beaded jewelry and points between. Participants in this class will learn the basics of kumihimo while making an 8 strand braid using a card technique rather than a marudai. I will supply all cards, yarns and instructional handouts.

Supplies: Students should bring scissors, large eye tapestry needle and pen or pencil. We will learn 3 different braid structures and finish the braid with a simple tassel.

Materials fee: $15.

Mini Intro to Combination Knitting Saturday 12-2pm (2 hrs)

Instructor: Annie Modesitt

Class Size: 6 - 20

This is an overview of the Combination Knitting Method with some minor background on Western and Eastern Knitting styles. This is not meant as an intensive course but as a chance to learn a new way to knit, or a way for beginners to get going using a very easy to learn method.

NOTE: The method I use for knitting & purling has been christened “Combination Knitting" by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts writing in the Fall 2000 Interweave Knits magazine. As the name implies, it's a combination of Western or German style knitting and Eastern knitting. I find that this method of knitting is easier and quicker, creates a nicer tension with less "rowing out" and is much easier on the hands (less wrist strain.) If this method is different than how you've been taught, give it a try and you may discover a new love of knitting blooming! If you're a first time knitter - enjoy! You can master this right away! This method also creates an incredibly even stitch -my knitting is frequently compared to machine knitting for it's regular tension and even stitching.

Nuno Felting Saturday 1 - 3 (2 hrs)

Instructor: Meredith Setser

Students will learn the basic principles of nuno (japanese word for woven cloth) felting while completing a lovely lightweight stole or scarf out of luxurious fine wools including cormo and merino and a variety of decorative silks and glitzes for evening (or daytime, if you prefer) wear. Nuno felting is a simple and easy process in which a thin layer of wool is laminated unto a fabric base, generally a fine silk gauze, to produce a light weight felt fabric suitable for a variety of garments. The class will also discuss a variety of ways to embellish your scarves further, including fringes and beading.

Materials fee: $18.00 Will cover the wool, silk, directions, and silk gauze required to make a silk scarf.

Participants will need to bring: scissors, a bath towel, and a washboard (optional).

Cable Mania (Look Mom, No Needle!) Saturday 3-5pm (2 hrs)

Even if you’re a beginning knitter, you can cable like an Irish Fisherman (or woman).

Participants should bring with them: Size 6, 7 & 8 knitting needles light colored worsted weight yarn, darning needles.

Instructor: Annie Modesitt

Skill level: Advanced beginner - able to knit and purl

Class Limit: 10

Knitting is not just a yarn experience!! Expand your horizons and get wired! In this class we'll cover the basics of casting on, knitting and binding off using 26 gauge silver plated copper wire.
